Ms. Secord first began instructing chemistry laboratories as an undergraduate student at Mount Allison University, where she completed a B.Sc. and an Honours Certificate in Chemistry. At Queen's University, where she completed a Master of Science in Analytical Chemistry, laboratory instruction was part and parcel of the Graduate student's way of life. Two years spent in Alabama at the University of Alabama in Huntsville developed from a part-time Faculty appointment, again instructing chemistry laboratories, into a full-time appointment as University Environmental Health and Safety Officer. The position included the duties of Chemistry Stock Room Manager, University Hazardous Waste Manager, Radiation Control Technician, and Undergraduate Chemistry Laboratory Supervisor (which included not only the technical aspect of laboratory equipment preparation, but also the scheduling of instructional staff and faculty).
Arriving at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in Corner Brook opened the way for making chemistry laboratory instruction in itself into a career. The sojourn at Grenfell began as a part-time Instructor in the Chemistry Department, leading to a full-time appointment as Instructional Assistant, and then as Laboratory Instructor in Environmental Science/Chemistry. During this time, interests in the fields of Analytical Chemistry and Natural Products were developed, and first and second year chemistry laboratory, third year Environmental Science (Analytical Chemistry) and fourth year Environmental Science (Aquatic Chemistry) laboratory instruction were added to the repertoire.
In the summers of 1999 and 2000, a new challenge was undertaken when classroom instruction of Chemistry was added to her laboratory experience. This opened the door to the position she presently occupies, as Lecturer in Environmental Science/Chemistry for the academic year 2000-2001, instructing first year Chemistry and Environmental Science courses.
