Dr. Michael Newton
Cert. of Education King Alfred's College. B.A., M.A., Ph.D. McMaster; Professor, Religious Studies
I am professor of Religious Studies at Sir Wilfred
Grenfell College, Corner Brook, Newfoundland. Some years back I wrote
The
Concept of Purity in the Letters of Paul and at Qumran (Cambridge University
Press, 1985). Among the things I teach are biblical studies, eastern religions and religion and the environment. I
have also been involved in a three hour credit Student Success Course, called The Idea of
the University (University 1010).We use Dave Ellis' Becoming
a Master Student, a book I recommend. I played a modest role on the
editorial board for the Canadian Edition. I continue to study the ways that
universities can encourage students to be successful in their first year of
studies and hang in and finish their degrees in a timely manner.
I have recently completed my role as author to a series of religious education text books for the elementary grades.
My research at the moment involves the "sacred geography'" of the Incas as displayed in the Sacred Valley of the Incas in Peru.
My main professional interest continues to be teaching. I am constantly renewing and refreshing current courses and planning new ones. At present I am doing research in ecopsycholgy and also the practice of mindfulness in the class room to reduce student stress and improve learning.
My other interests involve various outdoor pursuits that include cross country skiing, running ( I have completed a few marathons), mountain biking and hiking. This year I did the bike and run portion of the 70.3 Half Ironman here in Corner Brook. I have worked as a hiking and cycling guide in Newfoundland and on the islands of St. Pierre and Miquelon and as a guest lecturer on circumnavigation trips of Newfoundland on a board a cruise ship.
