Sea Kayaking in Western Newfoundland- Stephenville area
This area has lots of great paddling potential--one of our all time favourite paddles is the "Gravels"-seen in the panel below. It one of the most scenic short paddles we have ever done. Also Sandy Point is a makes a great island to paddle to in Bay St. George. Also check out Sheaves Cove-a very scenic launch point. But like any place in Western Newfoundland-you must watch the wind since this is coast lies in the face of the prevailing westerlies.

| Sea Kayaking The Gravels
The Gravels near Stephenville, Newfoundland is a real find. The put in is located on the isthmus
leading to the Port aux Port Peninsula. It has very clear water and the
sloping beds of limestone make for simply amazing paddling. There are loads
of nocks and crannies to explore and you can stop along the way to look for
fossils in the rock. The best place to stay is
SPRUCE PINE ACRES, which is just up
the road. Another great feature of this location is the easy put in at the
Gravels Hiking Trail Parking lot and that the area is protected from the
prevailing SW winds. For a selection of other images and notes from this superb spot

Sea Kayaking Sandy Point- Sandy Point is near Stephenville in Western Newfoundland and offers a great sea kayaking trip with the added bonus of bird watching and history. Sandy Point is just a short 30-40 minute paddle from St. George's and the route is well protected from SW winds. We recently took a trip there with Cal and Arlene White of Addventure X and had the nicest night paddle and sunset you could imagine. They also rent kayaks and have a small lodge and restaurant just up off the beach so that you can take advantage of those evening paddles. For more images and notes on exploring see Sandy Point. |

Paddling at Sheaves Cove- We recently did a great paddle from this location on the Port au Port Peninsula. Sheaves Cove is on the south side of the peninsula and offers paddling past a small waterfall and interesting cliffs. There are small beaches tucked away and there is a nice walking trail just above the shore. There is normally a hidden waterfall but on our last visit in late June 2006 it was dry. Turn in the community at the sign indicating trail and hidden falls. This road leads to the water and the cobble beach which can be used for launching your kayaks. This coast faces south so you might not be able to launch here in moderate or strong southwest winds. Click SHEAVES for more pictures. |
