Sea Kayaking in Newfoundland- White Bay

This region has become one of our favourite destinations-it is closer to Corner Brook than many people think and the Sop's Arm area in particular offers a variety of paddling experiences from circumnavigating islands to shoreline routes.

This is a great place to paddle and is only 1.5 hours from Corner Brook. To get here head east past Deer Lake and then turn north on Highway 420 to Sop's Arm. Recently we put in at the Government Wharf and paddled around George's Island. This makes a nice short paddle but depending on your interest and abilities you could paddle around Sop's Island or do a shoreline traverse from Jackson's Arm to Sop's Arm (or reverse). You could camp at the park that is located on the Main River. For more images on this area click SOP'S ARM

This is a nice shoreline paddle that is about 15 km in length. It could be done in reverse depending on wind direction. We recently did this trip from Sop's Arm to Jackson's Arm due to the SW wind that helped us along the way. The first part is very protected due to the presence of George's Island and Sop's Island but once you go past this area you need to be prepared. The coastline beyond Sop's Island is very rugged with few landing places and if there is any kind of an easterly swell you will trouble landing in any case. So this trip is for experienced paddlers. On our trip we saw eagles. It took us 3 and 1/2 hours including lunch and we dropped a car off along a beach in Jackson's Arm to shuttle us back to Sop's Arm. Click JACKSON'S ARM for more pics.
