Alpine skiing in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia has 3 Alpine Ski resorts and we visited all 3 recently on a road trip through the Atlantic region. We started with Wentworth and dipped down to Martock and then on to Ben Eoin.

Wentworth has the largest vertical in Nova Scotia (815 feet) and 20 trails making it the largest ski area in the province. We had a great weather day while we were there and I was joined by some instructors and the terrain park manager who showed me the runs. Wentworth has a very good terrain park with features in a couple of places on the hill but what impressed me most were the hardwood glades. Wentworth says they have the best glades in the east and I would have to agree. The even spacing of the birch trees (they are cleaned out by volunteers in the fall) would make for very good skiing. Martock Ski area is located about a 45 minute drive from Halifax and has a vertical drop of 600 feet. It has the easiest terrain of the places we visited but they have done amazing things with their terrain park. While we were there Martock was hosting the Riders Cup which only has 5 stops in Canada. In the photo to the right is one of the riders in that event. Martock also is the only resort in the region to have telemark skis for rent and they have an active tele instructional programme. Ben Eoin Ski area is located near Sidney on Cape Breton Island. It has a vertical drop of 500 feet and 11 runs. I was impressed with the view overlooking East Bay and the runs had quite abit of variety. I toured the area with 2 ski instructors and was very impressed with the skills of a keen group of snowboarders with were hitting the jumps and rails all afternoon. Ben Eoin. Most of the runs are named for various birds and they have a quad lift with a beginner surface tow. For more information contact www.skibeneoin.com and click Eoin for more images.
