On our most recent visit to
St. John's we stayed for a night at the Murray Premises Hotel. We liked its
great location and fine service. The front desk staff pointed us to good
places to eat as well as suggested we visit the MUN Botanical Gardens which
we fully recommend. The rooms at the Murray Premises are large and well
appointed. George Street with its nightlife is just a short walk away and
the water front is around the corner. There are also a variety of shops and
restaurants in the building which is is very handy. Click
Murray for
more pictures of this hotel and St. John's. Also click

The 4.5 star Inn by the Bay in Dildo has a classic setting with a large lawn stretching almost to the ocean. Colourful chairs dot the front lawn and we enjoyed a cool drink and snacks with the beautiful view of the bay in front of us. The Inn is set in a restored house and our room was small but nicely finished. You can also have dinner in the George House dining room and we enjoyed a fine meal with a view of the ocean. The next morning while we sipped coffee we even saw a minke whale cruising for its breakfast just offshore. The owners take a hands on approach and their service really stands out. We have stayed here on a couple of occasions and really enjoyed the suggestions our hosts on what to see and do in the area. On our most recent visit we had just arrived when they told us about the amazing icebergs in just around the corner. "You can register later" they said "Just go and see them". The bergs were outstanding and later they told us about seeing the sunset at the lighthouse. That was another great tip and seeing the sunset behind the nearby islands was a photographers dream. They also serve fresh local home made jams for breakfast. For more info see Crewes. |

This is a fine 4 star Bed and Breakfast in Cupids, NL which is located on Conception Bay in Eastern Newfoundland. It once was an old church built in 1910 and the owners have restored it while maintaining some of the fine lines and windows of the church. It is very quite and located adjacent to a great set of hiking trails. We hiked the Burnt Head trail system while we were there and you can leave right from the B and B. Cupids is celebrating the Cupids 400 next year so that is a good excuse to go and see this area. It is the oldest English settlement in North America and they have a fine archeological site in the community as well. Click Haven for more information and pictures.

Leaside Manor is a great find for
those people interested in staying in older houses with character. It has
been named as one of Canada's most romantic destinations and is conveniently
located in St. John's. It is 4.5 stars and offers fireplaces, luxurious
beds, double tubs and the breakfast in bed service is popular. We also got a
great tip on a place to visit while in St John's that was one of our
highlights--it is the waves breaking on the rocks of Flatrock, which is just
north of the city. This spot is breathtaking and we never would have seen it
if owner Elaine Hann hadn't suggested it. Click

Fishers' Loft Inn has just been rated on of the top 15 Inns in Canada by National Geographer Traveler Magazine. And for good reason. It has a view which is out of this world. On our recent stay we saw icebergs from our bedroom window and hiked the nearby Skerwink Trail which has been selected as one of Canada's top 3 hikes. The buildings are modeled on the traditional architecture of this part of Newfoundland and they emphasize local foods for their dinner and breakfast menu. When we were there we had lobster one night (yum yum) and salmon the next. Nearby is Trinity with its summer theatre and historic buildings. This new 5 star inn in St. John's, NL
has lots to offer, especially if you like art or the Titanic. Although these
topics would seem to disconnected, the Ryan Mansion blends them in an
unexpected way. Oral traditional has it that the wood work and particularly
the stair case were made by the same crafts men in Belfast that built the
wooden furnishings for the Titanic. The huge house was built by merchant
James Ryan over the exact same time that the Titanic was being built and his
ships brought back woodwork from Ireland during this time. But there is more
to the Ryan Mansion-it has marble baths, interesting art work and gourmet
food. For more information contact
