Don Downer, professor at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, Corner Brook, was born at Indian Islands. He is married to the former Wynanne Shea and they have three adult children, Philip, Russ and Adrienne. His work and business experiences range from insho re cod trap fishing and marine and freshwater biology to land development and entrepreneuring. His professional career has included biologist, teacher, principal, program coordinator and supervisor of teacher interns in Canada and the United Kingdom. He i s currently president of a land development company and at one point owned and ran a worm farm and fishing supply service. He holds a masters degree in marine biology and a doctorate in education.
Writing has always been his passion. He has published numerous papers and short stories on topics ranging from outport life and marine crustaceans to Newfoundland's denominational education system. His first book, Uprooted People: The Indian Islands, published in 1991, is a collection of poems, fictional and non-fictional accounts of an outport way of life which is quickly disappearing. The book grew out of a reunion of Indian Islanders which he helped organize in 1988.
Don has organized workshops and spoken nationally and internationally on topics which include improving teaching, school administration and school effectiveness; resettlement; the instructional use of computers; change; and, marine and freshwater biol ogy. In recent years his social, cultural and historical research on Sandy Point and resettlement has generated much media attention and community and university interest.
