The Program |
Summer 2006
Our regular semester has ended, and we would like to thank
all those who supported us and our students this past year. We have an exciting
season shaping up for next year, please check back for details.
In the meantime, though, we would like to call your attention
to an upcoming production this summer. June 30, July
1 - 2
Fear of Flight, created by Jill Keiley and Robert
Chafe
The theatre program was thrilled to host Jill Keiley and Robert Chafe, of
Artistic Fraud of Newfoundland, as Guest Artists last winter. Their project,
Fear of Flight, featured students in the second and third year of the
program and consisted of a series of meditations on flying, with contributions
from some of the country's most vaunted playwrights, including Berni Stapleton,
Judith Thompson, Guillermo Verdecchia, Bryden MacDonald, Daniel MacIvor and
others. The show was a smash success at the College, but that only proved to be
the first part of the adventure. When it was decided that the Magnetic North Theatre
Festival, a roaming festival of Canadian theatre based out of Ottawa, would be
hosted in St. John's this year, the students were invited to perform Fear of
Flight as part of the offerings. Tasked with the responsibility of taking the
production to St. John's, the students (with the able support of Artistic Fraud's
manager Ann Brophy) formed their own company (Endless Sky) and began organizing,
preparing and fund-raising to bring the show to the Festival.
The theatre program at Grenfell is inordinately proud of this
accomplishment and we congratulate our students on this acheivement. We would encourage
everyone who is able to see the show for themselves in St. John's this summer.
