Arif Hasnain, Associate Professor
(teaches Acting and directs for our mainstage)
A graduate of The National Theatre
School, Arif began his professional directing career at the Manitoba Theatre
Centre where he became Artistic Director in 1976. He has directed at the
Vancouver Playhouse, The Cricket Theatre in Minneapolis, The Shaw Festival and
in 1977 he directed Ibsen’s Ghosts for the Stratford Festival.
He has taught acting at the National Theatre School, The University of Manitoba,
The University of Ottawa, The Centre for Actor’s Study in Toronto and at
Dalhousie University where he was head of the Acting Program. Arif’s
productions for the Theatre Program include A Flea in her Ear,
Love for Love,
Light Shining in Buckinghamshire, Lion in the Streets,
The Country Wife, and most recently, Summerfolk.

Todd Hennessey, (on
Leave),
Assistant Professor (teaches Acting and
Theatre History, and directs for our mainstage)
A member of the first graduating class
of the Theatre Department in 1992, Todd later went on to receive an MFA in
Directing from the University of Calgary. But not before “earning his stripes”
as a professional actor, stage manager and tour manager. Todd was also an
Associate with Rising Tide Theatre in St. John’s, where he was a member of the
founding company of the Trinity Pageant and Festival. Todd has directed for
nearly every major theatre company in the province and has been heavily involved
with new play development. Over the past ten years he has worked with writers
such as Kevin Major, Joan Sullivan, and Mary Barry. Todd has directed Gordon
Pinsent’s Corner Green
for TNL, and is happy to continue a long standing relationship with Gemini award
winning writer Des Walsh with the premieres of Songs of Weather,
Johnny August, Garland House the Second and, this past
summer, The Queen of Swansea.

Ken Livingstone, Head of Fine Arts, Associate Professor (teaches
Acting and Theatre History, and directs for our mainstage)
The first graduate of the Master’s
program in directing at the University of British Columbia, Ken formed one of
the first alternative theatre companies in Canada, The Gallimaufry in Vancouver
in 1968. He has directed more than 150 productions (many of which he also
designed) in theatres from Vancouver to St. John’s. From the Shaw Festival
to major regional theatres, to summer stock and dinner theatre his productions
have ranged from Shakespeare through modern and contemporary classics to full
scale musicals. In Newfoundland he has directed for Theatre Newfoundland
and Labrador and Rising Tide Theatre both in St. John’s and Trinity where his
many “site-specific” outdoor productions of Shakespeare include A
Midsummer Night’s Dream,
The Tempest and Macbeth. In 1986 Ken came to
Newfoundland to help create Memorial University’s new school of Fine Arts where
he was the first Head of the Department of Theatre and for which he has directed
more than 30 productions. In the fall of 2001 he directed and designed the
professional production of Al Pittman’s West Moon which toured
Ireland. Ken is on sabbatical for the fall semester 2003 in Montreal where he is
directing Blue/Orange by Joe Penhall for Centaur Theatre Company.

Carol Nelson, Assistant Professor (teaches
Stagecraft and designs for our mainstage)
A member of the first graduating class,
in Stagecraft, of the Theatre Department in 1992, Carol was also the first
winner of the President’s Medal for Excellence in Theatre. The following
year she received her Master’s Degree in Design from The Wimbledon School of Art
in London. In Newfoundland she has designed for Theatre Newfoundland and
Labrador and her many productions for Rising tide Theatre including Hamlet,
A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Tempest and Cruel
Tears. For The Theatre Program her most recent productions include
The Fantasticks, The Trojan Women and Electra.
She was costume designer for the production of West Moon which
toured Ireland.

roy Hansen-robitschek, Assistant Professor
(teaches Stagecraft and designs for our mainstage)
roy has been designing sets, costumes
and lights for hundreds of plays, in theatres and schools, all across Canada
since 1979. He has been Designing and teaching Stagecraft at Sir Wilfred
Grenfell College in Corner Brook since 1992. His paintings are included in
collections, corporate and private, in Canada, The United States and Great
Britain. He also builds musical instruments and furniture.

Paddy Monaghan, Associate Professor (Resident
actor)
A
professor of Chemistry, Paddy is also cross-appointed to the Theatre Program as
professional actor in residence. Paddy has worked professionally for
theatres in England and Ontario and in Newfoundland for Theatre Newfoundland and
Labrador and Rising Tide Theatre in Trinity. He has performed in more than 30
productions for the Theatre Department and he produced and played the Narrator
in the
West Moon to Ireland tour.
