Beating Waves

When the applet has loaded, you may Start.


The animation shows the addition of the waves in the top and middle panels, creating a beat pattern in the bottom panel.  The x axis is displacement, not time.   Time is in seconds at the top of the frame.


  1. Find the frequency of the top wave, f(x,t).
  2. Find the frequency of the second wave, g(x,t).
  3. Calculate the expected beat frequency of the superposition of the two waves.
  4. Determine the beat frequency of the third wave.
  5. Was your result from question 3 the same as the measured result from question 4?
