Programme Note

SHaconne was written for and is dedicated to Newfoundland flutist Simon Hodgett. It was completed in February, 1983.

The work is a cross between the standard chaconne and variation forms. The influence of the forms can also be found in the relatively tonal quality of the work.

All of the material in the work is based on the eleven-note series heard at the beginning. This series in turn is treated both as a fundamental bass line and as a melodic source throughout the work, in its original, retrograde and inverted forms.

Separating the "variations" in the earlier part of the work are four reflective cadential passages written in a more traditional contrapuntal style.

SHaconne was awarded first prize in the 1983 Newfoundland and Labrador Arts and Letters Competition.
