Programme Note

Ode for Winds, Op. 31a is an arrangement for woodwind quintet of my Ode, Op. 31 which was written to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Canadian Music Centre and the opening of Chalmers House, Toronto, June 23-25, 1984.

The Ode to Newfoundland is the province's national anthem. I wanted to write a setting that would express the quality of the landscape that surrounds the island. A tune, reminiscent of the Newfoundland folksong She's Like the Swallow, is heard in the Flute at the beginning and end of the piece.
