Programme Note

Ode was written to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Canadian Music Centre and the opening of Chalmers House, Toronto, June 23-25, 1984.

The Ode to Newfoundland is the province's national anthem. I wanted to write a setting that would express the quality of the landscape that surrounds the island. A tune, reminiscent of the Newfoundland folksong She's Like the Swallow, is heard in the Flute at the beginning and end of the piece.
