Works for Mezzo-Soprano
4. The
Visitor: an Opera in Five Scenes with Prologue, Op.
58
(2000) The Visitor is scored for
Mezzo-Soprano, Lyric Baritone, Bass Baritone, Speaking Role
and Chamber Orchestra. Hekja (Mezzo-Soprano) is the focus of
the work along with Haki (Lyric Baritone). Canadian
Mezzo-Soprano Sandra Graham created the role and her advice
and suggestions were invaluable in helping me write the
part. 3. Invisible
Cities, Op. 49
(1993) This work is scored for
Mezzo-Soprano and Clarinet. It is based on the work of the
same name by Italian writer Italo Calvino. The text is in
English, Italian and French. It is one of my favourite works
but it is difficult both for the singer and the
clarinettist. 2. Five
Newfoundland Folksongs, Op.
32
(1986) Five Newfoundland Folksongs
is scored for Mezzo-Soprano and Clarinet. The five songs I
chose are not as well-known as other Newfoundland folksongs
but they are every bit as beautiful. The work is a challenge
for both performers since it takes about 20 minutes to
perform. The songs can be performed as a group or
individually. It is one of my more successful and popular
works. 1.
Aria
for Medium Voice and Piano, Op.
25 (1979) This work is a setting of a poem by
Newfoundland writer John Steffler. The setting is very
simple and the work is not very difficult.
