Works for Large Orchestra
|
I have composed two works for large orchestra, both written within a year of each other. Unfortunately, it is not very often that a composer has the chance to write for large orchestra. These two commissions gave me that opportunity. I enjoyed writing for the medium very much and hope to create more works for large orchestra in the future.

2. "...and a roll on the gong," Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra, Op. 36 (1987) This concerto was written for the brilliant Newfoundland percussionist Don Wherry. It is an extremely difficult work both for the soloist and the orchestra. The American conductor and composer David Amram discovered it and has performed the third movement with several orchestras in Canada (the Toronto Symphony) and the US (Minneapolis Symphony). While originally written for one soloist, it can also be performed by several.

1. In the Late Wind of Death, Op. 35 (1987) The work is based on the first choral ode from Sophocles'Antigone. The piece describes in musical terms the wonderful imagery and message contained in the ancient Greek text, that humankind can perform marvellous works, but cannot escape death. At its source is a quotation from the first act of Richard Strauss' opera Die Frau Ohne Schatten (The Woman without a Shadow).I consider it among the best pieces I have composed. |
