Programme Note

Four Odes and Fanfares for Brass and Timpani were written on commission from the '77 Canada Games Committee for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1977 Canada Summer Games held in St. John's, Newfoundland, August, 1977.

All four movements are based either harmonically or melodically on the Ode to Newfoundland. Each movement was intended for a specific event in the opening or closing ceremonies:

I - Opening Fanfare

II - Fanfare for the Entry of the Athletes

III - Music for the entry of the flamebearer and the lighting of the flame

IV - Music for the lowering of the Newfoundland Games flag
