Works for Chamber Orchestra

3. Sinfonia Concertante, Op. 46 (1991)

This work was commissioned by three orchestras: the Newfoundland Symphony, the Manitoba Chamber Players and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. It is a work for solo string quartet and string orchestra. Usually the first chair string players perform the solo parts, but I would imagine it would be a great vehicle for a guest string quartet wth any chamber orchestra. I was inspired by the sinfonie concertante of the past, especially in the last movement. It has received many very good performances throughout the country.

2. The Maiden's Lament, Op. 42d (1991)

This work is scored for Soprano, Oboe and Chamber Orchestra (Flute, 2 Bassoons, 2 Horns, String). It is an arrangement of the original work for Soprano, Oboe and Piano. I would like to work some more on this arrangement, and so at the moment it is unavailable for performance. However, if there was a request to perform it, I would consider it.

1. Shanadithit, Op. 29 (1983)

This work was commissioned by the Victoria International Festival in 1983, a year that celebrated the arrival of Sir Humphrey Gilbert to Newfoundland in 1583. Even though the work was to be premiered as far away from Newfoundland as possible and still be in Canada, I decided to focus on a Newfoundland theme and to create a work based on the tragic extinction of the Beothucks, the aboriginal inhabitants of Newfoundland. Shanadithit was the last of the Beothucks and the work describes and pays tribute to her life and death. It is scored for string trio, woodwind quintet, piano (harpsichord), and percussion. It has been performed many times and usually creates quite a stir!
