Programme Note

Canticum is the word used by the ancient Romans to indicate a song that was interspersed amid the spoken dialogue in comedy. As the title also suggests, Canticum is a lyrical piece for guitar consisting of simple melodic lines interspersed with passagtes of busier activity. I have tried to exploit the sustaining quality of the guitar throughout, realizing that there is a limit to the amount of time a struck chord or note will remain sounding, yet wanting to maintain the illusion (by indicating that sustained notes are to be held at great length) that the sounds are still being heard by the listeners, that the sounds have not actually stopped but have merely attained softer levels of dynamics.

This work was adapted from my Five Songs.
