Works for Bass Baritone
I have not had many opportunities to
write for male voice. However, my opera The Visitor
contained a major role for bass baritone. I found writing
for this voice a challenge and I must admit I placed quite a
lot of demands on the singer. 1. The
Visitor: an Opera in Five Scenes with Prologue, Op.
58
(2000) The Visitor is scored for
Mezzo-Soprano, Lyric Baritone, Bass Baritone, Speaking Role
and Chamber Orchestra. Hekja (Mezzo-Soprano) is the focus of
the work along with her husband Haki (Lyric Baritone).
However, the bass baritone is required to sing three roles.
In the Prologue he sings the role of an Icelandic Bard,
singing from the original Icelandic version of the
Vinland Sagas. Scene 2 is entirely devoted to a bass
baritone monologue for the character Tyrkir, a German
rune-stone carver. Finally, in Scene 4, the singer creates
the role of Decker, a modern archaeologist.
