Pink Story Project

News

September 2004 - Barb and Marlene got together for the signing of the colophon. Shortly after this, Marlene sent off the first copies to her gallery, PABA, in New Haven, CT.

August 2004 - In August, Linda, Lacey and Alyssa continued to work with Marlene on finishing up the whole edition. This will continue on into the fall. Linda will be working with Marlene to finish up the editioning of the photogravures for sinistral and Lacey will be assisting with the binding. David had set the type for the colophon earlier in the summer. Marlene now used this, along with some polymer plates, to print the colophon. The colophon was then glued into the wrapper.

July 20, 2004 - Tara arrived in Corner Brook on July 20th and the next ten days were a period of intense activity. Shirley, Alyssa, Linda and Lacey all worked on this stage as well. There was an enormous amount of paper cutting to do, trimming pages down to their final sizes. Marlene and Tara made the first maps and mock-ups. Paper and tyvek was measured with a paper micrometer in order to calculate the size of the spacing bars needed for gluing the books. Tara did a lot of math for a day or so. David found or constructed the spacers, remaking them as we made the minute adjustments necessary for a perfect fit. Finally, the correct sizes were arrived at and a prototype was made. We were then able to figure out the final sizes for the covers and wrappers. Book cloth was cut to size and marked for gluing. The boards were cut for the covers and the wrappers. Linda and Alyssa worked at gluing the fabric for the covers and wrappers while Marlene and Tara assembled the text blocks. All of this happened during a rare heat wave, resulting in much higher humidity than normal for Corner Brook. Tara left on July 30th and by that time we had finalized all the components and completed a few sets.

July 2004 - In July, Marlene did the letterpress printing of the spirals, title and half-title pages with assistance from Linda. Due to the inavailability of a particular paper selected for the back sheets of sinistral, Marlene decided to hand dye the Lanaquarelle. This was done in early July. Linda did a lot of paper cutting during this time - preparing paper for the backing sheets for both dextral and sinistral. The polymer plates for the tiles were then made, once again, with the assistance of David. These were the last components to be printed. The very last letterpress printings were done with Tara’s assistance.

June 2004 - In June, Marlene made a trip to St. John’s and met with Tara Bryan to finalize structure and binding plans. Marlene then made all the final decisions on paper and bookcloth, with colour consultation with Linda. All the binding materials had to be ordered in since Corner Brook does not have a local book binding supply store. There were some tense days as some of the supplies took quite a while to arrive. Also in June, Marlene made the polymer plates, with computer assistance from David, that were used to print the spirals and the title/half-title pages. In late June and early July, the photogravure plates were finalized and Marlene and Linda began the editioning.

May 2004 - In early May we finished up all the screenprinting for dextral just in time before Alyssa, Matthew, Lacey and Nick headed off to Harlow.
Marlene started the letterpress for dextral, Nick was able to squeeze in one day before leaving. For the remainder of the month, Marlene worked on the letterpress for dextral with help from David. Concurrently, she continued to make the photogravure plates for sinistral. Making the photogravure plates had been ongoing since the winter.

May 6, 2004 - Nick, Marlene, and Dave will begin the letterpress printing this afternoon. There has been a bit of a rush to get the printing done, as many of us have travel plans and other obligations this summer (Alyssa, Matthew, Nick, and Lacey leave to study in Harlow on Tuesday). Over the summer, work will begin on the binding and casing of the books.

May 5, 2004 - The screenprinting of pink story: dextral has been ongoing nonstop over the past two weeks, with the final color printed this afternoon. The next step is to use letterpress to print the paint chip names.

April 23, 2004 - The first color was pulled today! Matthew also began constructing this website, and Jackie has been busy cutting paper.

April 22, 2004 - Today we cut stencils for each paint chip, exposed the screens, and did a bunch of other things to prepare for printing tomorrow.

March 21, 2004 - Nick and Matthew set the first six pages of letterpress text for pink story: dextral.

February 6, 2004 - Dave, Nick, and Matthew set up the letterpress studio. Also in February, copper plate and photogravure preparation began for pink story: sinistral. Linda has been busy mixing colors, and Alyssa and Shirley have been organizing the paint chips and making transparencies.

January 2004 - Initial color research and preparation for the project begins. For now, most of the concentration is on pink story: dextral.
