Dr. Wynanne Downer CFUW Bursary for Women

This bursary, valued at a portion of the income from the endowment, will be made to a female student who graduated from a high school in Newfoundland and Labrador and who is pursuing a degree at Grenfell Campus.  Preference will be given to a female student who entered university as a mature student (twenty one years or older), who is beyond her first year of studies, is in financial need and meets the minimum academic requirements for a bursary.

Normally it is awarded in the Spring and applications are available from Student Services, Grenfell Campus, MUN, Corner Brook in January, or by contacting lcarroll@swgc.mun.ca

Wynanne Downer was born in St. John's and raised in Stephenville Crossing, NL. The bilingual holder of a Ph.D. in Educational Administration specializing in parent school councils, she taught French Immersion for several years as well as teaching in English-language classes at all school levels.  She also served as a school principal and taught undergraduate and graduate university courses. The author of several books and scholarly and popular papers, she also helped pioneer a number of organizations, including CFUW Corner Brook, to which she was fully committed. Her last commitment was to the municipal council of Corner Brook where she served until her passing. Wynanne never did anything at half throttle.

Wynanne and her husband Don had three children, Philip, Russell and Adrienne, who have between them given the Downers five grandchildren; the families live in the U.S. and western Canada.
