This site is dedicated to the appreciation
of the plants that surround us in field, forest, bog, barrens,
gardens, roadsides, and in our many wetlands and waters. Not
only do these plants provide us with much beauty, pleasure
and recreation, they form the backbone of much of our economy
in the tourism, forestry, horticulture, agriculture and
wildlife hunting sectors. Some species are rare and to be cherished,
others provide food for wildlife, birds and fishes, some are
weedy and invasive, others are edible and eagerly gathered
each year, a few are poisonous and to be avoided, many
build and enrich our soils, and so the list of their attributes
goes on and on.
Although the botanical world is often taken for granted, we owe much to the plants
that make our lives and surroundings pleasant and which
provide us sustenance in its many forms.

A variety of features are here highlighted
about different aspects of our provincial flora in the hope
of fostering a greater public awareness of our plants for
enjoyment, educational, and tourism purposes. Some
information about our species lies hidden in scientific publications
not accessible to the general public. Other sources
are largely unknown outside the small group of botanical
enthusiasts in this province. Much is unknown and awaits
to be discovered. We need to “spread the word” if
our botanical heritage is to be appreciated and considered
in the many social and economic decisions that must be taken
each year. If a few visiting this web site are encouraged
to contemplate and investigate their surrounding flora with
a renewed interest, then all the effort will have been worthwhile!
